As part of its mission to promote the art and history of the book, this season the Grolier Club will open some of its lectures to the public: 

2005

  • September 27: Grolier Club Member Eric Hollas of St. Johns University will speak on "Illuminating the Word: The Saint Johns Bible," concerning the first manuscript Bible to be produced in over five hundred years, and one of the great calligraphic ventures of the twentieth century. 6 pm at the Club.

  • November 8: Allen Packwood (Director of the Churchill Archives Centre, Churchill College, UK) will speak on "Sir Winston Churchill through his Papers." 6 pm at the Club.

  • December 7: Sian Flynn, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich will speak on "'The Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration: Scott & Shackleton at the National Maritime Museum." 6 pm, at the Club. This lecture is given in connection with the Books On Ice exhibition on view at the Grolier Club December 7, 2005-February 4, 2006.

  • December 13:  Fred Calabretta, Associate Curator and Oral Historian, Mystic Seaport Musem, will speak on aspects of the Books On Ice exhibition on view at the Grolier Club December 7, 2005-February 4, 2006.

  • December 19: Michael Bravo (Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge University) on "Narrating the Poles." 6 pm, at the Club. This lecture is given in connection with the Books On Ice exhibition on view at the Grolier Club December 7, 2005-February 4, 2006.

2006

  • January 10: Grolier Club member and co-curator David Stam will speak about the Books On Ice exhibition on view at the Club through February 4, 2006. Held during the January session of Rare Book School North, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Book Arts Press. 6 pm, at the Club.
