Historical/Biographical Note

Joseph Auslander was an American poet, anthologist and novelist, known particularly for editions a poetry anthology, The Winged Horse, first published in 1929. He served as poetry consultant and gifts officer at the Library of Congress from ca. 1937-1945. His poetry appeared over the decades in many poetry journals and general interest publications. Auslander also collaborated on two novels with his wife, the poet Audrey Wurdeman. He died in 1969.

 

Scope and Contents Note

Personal and business correspondence and holograph drafts of poems and printed texts by Joseph Auslander. Collection includes: typescripts and printed work by Auslander as well as typescripts of two novels he wrote with his wife, the poet Audrey Wurdeman: The Islanders (1951) and My Uncle Jan (1948). Also a collection of letters from the American poet John Hall Wheelock to Auslander; twelve envelopes that contain broadsides of poems by standard authors; and one envelope of printed ephemera.
