Historical/Biographical Note

English actor who performed at the Drury Lane theatre in London and specialized mainly in the roles of men-about-town and coxcombs. He collected some 240 pre-Restoration English plays for his library. After his death, Sotheby’s conducted a sale of his books in 1797 that went on for nine days.

 

Scope and Contents Note

List, presumably in Dodd’s own hand, of his collection of pre-Restoration, non-Shakespearean printed English drama, with his notes as to condition.

 

General Note

The title was given to the manuscript by the purchaser at the Sotheby’s sale of 1797.
