Historical/Biographical Note

American author and poet, born and died in Guildford, Connecticut, the town with which he is associated. After a youth spent in business in Connecticut, Halleck came to New York and attracted attention with humorous articles he wrote for the New York Evening Post. In 1819 he published the first of several editions of his longest single poem, Fanny, a satire on current fashions, social climbing, and politics written in the stanza form and meter of Byron’s Don Juan. Halleck’s output was small and much of his best work was included in his Poems of 1827. William Loring Andrews would become well known in New York City as a book collector, amateur publisher, writer and founding member of the Grolier Club.

Scope and Contents

Fourteen ALS written by Halleck to William Loring Andrews from November 1865 to June 1866 concerning Andrew’s plan to publish a handsome subscription edition of Fanny as a way of raising money to assist Halleck. In the letters Halleck supplied information about topical references in the poem for the “Notes” included in the 1866 edition of that work. The 1866 edition was limited to 70 copies, one of which (no. 24) accompanies the collection of letters. Two additional letters in the sequence appear to not be included in this collection.

[Letters written by Halleck to Andrews on March 13 and March 17 1866 were given by Andrews to friends and were not included in the collection purchased by the Grolier Club in 1980. One of these recipients, Robert H. Dodd, was a member of the Grolier Club (1888-1921) and a partner in the firm of Dodd, Mead & Co., which published a number of Andrew’s books. Another recipient, Frank E. Hopkins, was also a Grolier Club member (1893-1921).]
