Historical/Biographical Note

John S. Kebabian, a professional book appraiser who resided in Scarsdale, New York, was an active member of the Grolier Club from 1959 until the year before his death in 1980. He was the author of The Haymarket Affair and the Trial of the Chicago Anarchists, 1886. A member of the Grolier Club between 1959 and 1980, Kebabian exhibited his collection of 17th, 18th and early 19th century books about trades and crafts in England, France and America at the Grolier Club in 1979. He died in 1980.

 

Scope and Contents

Over 412 book appraisals made for the firms of G. A. Baker & Co., Inc., Samuel Marx, Inc. and others by Edward J. Lazare, Bernard C. Otto, Max Harzof and others.  Personal collections appraised include but are not limited to those of Hervey Allen, Leonard Bernstein, Nelson Doubleday, J. P. Morgan II, I. N. Phelps Stokes, and Lucius Wilmerding. Appraisals were also made for over 20 law firms and for collections acquired by the New York Public Library. Also appraisal materials from the 1930s for the collections relating to Abraham Lincoln offered to the Library of Congress and of the library of Henry C. Folger.  Entries include appraisal materials for the Herndon-Weik Lincoln collection purchased by the Library of Congress in the 1930s and the Library of Henry Clay Folger, which became the foundation of the Folger Shakespeare Library.
