Historical/Biographical Note

George L. McKay was Curator (1924-1959) of the Grolier Club, a New York City bibliophile society in New York City, and also served as its Librarian (1944-1959). From 1947 to 1964 he was advisor to the Edwin J. Beinecke Collection at Yale University (now housed in the Beinecke Rare Book Library) and compiled of a six volume catalog of Beinecke’s collection of Robert Louis Stevenson material. McKay was also the author of numerous articles on the book arts and author/compiler of twenty bibliographies and catalogs in this field. From about 1935 until his death McKay was an early member of the Typophiles, an informal association of persons working in the printing trades, book arts and libraries who shared a love typography and beautifully printed books. 

 

Scope and Contents Note

Correspondence relating to Typophile matters, including carbons of McKay’s letters and announcements and other printed ephemera. Includes the typescript of a work by him entitled “The Typophiles and Their Publications with Some Notes on Paul Bennett” (1972) written for the Typophiles which does not appear to have been published.
