Note
American poet, born in St. Louis, Missouri.
Moore graduated from Bryn
Mawr College
and from 1911-1915 taught at the Carlisle (Pennsylvania)
Indian School.
She moved to New York City in 1918
and worked at the New York Public Library while meeting other poets and
contributing to The Dial. Moore
was acting editor of The Dial from
1925 to 1929. Her work also appeared in the English magazine The Egoist along with works of other members
of the Imagist movement. English poet H. D. (Hilda Doolittle) published Moore’s
first book of poems without her knowledge in 1921. Moore
went on to publish substantially in prose and verse, and her Complete Poems appeared in 1967. She was
recipient of the Bollingen Prize, the National Book Award,
and the Pulitzer Prize.
Scope and Contents
Typescript of the lecture “Humility, concentration and
gusto,” delivered to the Grolier Club (a New York
bibliophile society) on December 21,
1948 marked with editorial correction of accidentals for publication
in the Gazette of the Grolier Club (Vol.
2, 1949). The collection also contains two states of the galley proofs and two
one-page TLS from Moore to George
Leslie McKay, librarian and curator of the Grolier Club, concerning the publication
of her lecture and the cancelled check in payment of her honorarium.
