Historical/Biographical Note

William Morris was an artist, designer, poet and socialist. In the last decade of his life he turned to fine printing and operated the Kelmscott Press at his home in Hammersmith, London.

Scope and Contents

In this autograph letter Morris mentions an unidentified manuscript in an “old Venetian binding” that he wishes the addressee to repair for him. He also discusses the binding and trimming of the sheets of his The Story of the Glittering Plain that he had printed at the Kelmscott Press as well as the green silk headbands for the vellum copies.

General Note

Morris used the firm of J. & J. Leighton (London) for repair work on his own books and manuscripts and for the binding of Kelmscott Press books. It is probable that the unidentified addressee of this letter was Walter James Leighton, to whom he directed other letters about the binding of The Story of the Glittering Plain.
