Historical/Biographical Note

Walter Pater was a critic and humanist. Among his best known works are the romance Marius the Epicurean (1885) and Studies in the History of the Renaissance (1873).

 

Scope and Contents Note

In this autograph letter Pater thanks George Allison Armour for sending him a copy of the Grolier Club edition of Philobiblon (1889), a 14th century work by the English bibliophile Richard de Bury, Bishop of Durham. Armour was a member of the Grolier Club, a New York City bibliophile society.
