2:30 PM-3:30 PM  Book Week Lecture
Grolier Club Librarian and fellow member Meghan Constantinou will shed light on the library of Anne-Julie-Françoise de Crussol d’Uzès, duchesse de La Vallière (1713-1797), wife of the famous eighteenth-century French bibliophile, Louis César de La Baume Le Blanc, duc de La Vallière (1708-1780). Although much has been written about the duc, Madame de La Vallière is rarely mentioned in the literature, and information about her as a book collector is completely absent. Drawing upon the manuscript private library catalogue of the duchesse’s collection, held by the Grolier Club Library, Meghan will discuss the nature, size, and scope of the library, while relating it to the larger context of book collecting in eighteenth-century France.
