6:00 PM-7:30 PM  Special Functions Lecture
Alessio Assonitis, Director, The Medici Archive Project, will speak via Zoom on “Cosimo I de' Medici: Bibliophile and Grand Duke.” Cosimo I de Medici’s interest in the printed word increased exponentially soon after he was elected Duke of Florence in 1537. His correspondence in the Medici Archives indicates that he enjoyed being involved, whenever possible, with all aspects of the process: reading and annotating texts; gifting, borrowing, and lending volumes; revising manuscripts; sponsoring and overseeing publication projects; and enforcing intellectual control and, occasionally, censorship. This talk will examine both the trajectory of taste and the collecting patterns that enabled Cosimo to assemble one of the most important personal libraries in early modern Europe. Q&A session follows. Reserve online through the Grolier Club website or by contacting Maev Brennan at [email protected]. This will be a live online event, via Zoom. You will receive from Maev an e-vite with your link to the Zoom meeting, the meeting ID number, and the passcode number that is now required. Just stay in the Zoom meeting if you also want to watch the Q&A. For those unable to join us for the Zoom session, the lecture will be recorded and made available to members on the Grolier Club page of the Vimeo website. This virtual event is also open to the general public, but Grolier members should NOT rsvp through Eventbrite.
