Historical/Biographical Note
George Nicol was active as a bookseller from 1769 to his death in 1829 at the age of eighty-eight. In addition to being the bookseller to George III, he also helped a number of wealthy clients build outstanding private libraries. His son, William Nicol, succeeded to the business after his death.

Scope and Contents
Autograph letters addressed to London bookseller George Nicol (d. 1829) and his son, William Nicol by major English book collectors of the early 19th century. The correspondents, mostly titled, include but are not limited to: Charles Abbot (Baron Colchester), the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (1776-1839), Baron Brougham and Vaux, Thomas Grenville, Earl Morton (1761-1827), the Duke of Norfolk (1746-1814), Antoine Augustin Renouard, Duke of Roxburghe (1740-1804), and the Earl of Spencer (1758-1854). The letters dated after 1829 are addressed to William Nicol. The letters discuss purchases, desired items, and important upcoming sales.
