Historical/Biographical Note
In 1893 French writer Anatole France first published his sketches of life in 18th century France, La rôtisserie de la reine pédauque, and it quickly became a popular text for illustrators. In 1935 Editions du Nord of Brussels published it as number 21 in the series “Les gloires litteraires.” Sylvain Sauvage was a prolific illustrator of French texts.

Scope and Contents Note
Fifty-seven engraved wood blocks and a unique example of the book printed on Japanese paper and accompanied by the original drawings by Sylvain Sauvage. The pages are uncut and unopened. Accompanying the book are two sets of illustrations printed in color on Holland paper as well as two sets printed in black and white on Chinese paper.

The pages are uncut and opened; the unbound signatures of the book are in a protective slipcase.
