Historical/Biographical Note
Bookseller and auctioneer, Arthur Swann worked in Liverpool and Leeds before coming to New York City and joining the Anderson Auction Company, where he prepared catalogs for book auctions. From 1913 he was associated with the American Art Association, where he organized the rare book and manuscript department. Swann left the AAA in 1927, and in 1929 it merged with Anderson Galleries. He served briefly as a vice president of the Brick Row Book Shop and from 1933 was a vice president of what became the Parke-Bernet Galleries in New York City. During his long career he prepared auction catalogs for many significant sales of rare books and manuscripts.
Scope and Contents Note
Fifty-seven bound and unbound book auction catalogs. Most of the auctions were conducted by the Anderson Auction Company or the American Art Association and from 1929 by the merged American Art Association/Anderson Galleries. Also, miscellaneous catalogs for sales held between 1898 and 1933 at Charles F. Libbie & Co., Inc., Charles F. Heartman, Ritter-Hopson Galleries, and the National Art Galleries. Most of the catalogs contain Swann’s holograph annotations relating to bids, prices and buyers. A number of them contain newspaper and magazine articles relating to the sales, and a few have letters from consignors or other involved in the sale.
[Abbreviations: p (priced), pp (partly priced), n (named), pn (partly named). McKay Number: Identifying number assigned to the auction by George L. McKay in his American Auction Catalogs, 1713-1934: A Union List (1937). This volume lists consignors, and name of sale, locates copies of the catalogs, and indicates if the copies are priced, etc.]
