Biographical/Historical Note:
Lidia Guibert Ferrara is an art director, author and journalist. Ferrara served as Special Projects Art Director for Random House from 1972 to 1975, Art Director for Alfred A. Knopf from 1975 to 1983 and Art Director for CDE, Gruppo Mondadori in Milan, Italy from 1983 to 2007. The materials in this collection cover her time at both Random House (specifically, the Vintage subdivision of Random House) and Knopf, and include examples of her work with David Levine, Daniel Maffia, Fred Marcellino, Paul Rand, and Edward Sorel, among many others. As an art director, Ferrara required all of her artists and designers to first read the manuscript for the book before starting work on the book jacket itself, but set few additional guidelines.
Ferrara is also the author of Reclining Nude (2002) published by Thames & Hudson, Chronicle Books and Orbis Verlag, and, founder of the web journal/blog Arts Summary, A Visual Journal, (artssummary.com). From 2007 to 2012 she was the New York Correspondent for Verve International Monthly Review and Bogart magazines. Ferrara taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York and Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan. She is the recipient of The American Book Award as Art Director for Birdy by William Wharton and over 100 Awards from AIGA, Art Directors Club and Society of Illustrators. Ferrara was Chairwoman of the AIGA Book Clinic The Publishing Process and Juror for Print Casebooks, AIGA Poster Show and AIGA Cover Show. She had a One Woman Show at the Galleries of Estudio Giesso in Buenos Aires, Argentina and organized and coordinated the exhibition Record Album Covers and Posters in the USA at Centro de Arte y Comunicación in Buenos Aires. Lidia Guibert Ferrara is an Honors Graduate from Parsons School of Design and has a B.A. in Fine Arts from New York University.
Scope and Content Note:
The images and book jackets in boxes 1 and 2 of this collection were compiled by Ferrara during research for a book on the history of the book jacket, which was never published. The research was done in New York and London (Bodleian Library and Victoria and Albert Museum). Some of the slide images were taken by Ferrara, while others were taken either by the holding institution or the designers themselves and given to Ferrara. The book jackets were collected by Ferrara. The thumb drive included in this collection contains digital versions of the articles and research materials also provided as hard copies by Ferrara. Some digital files have been duplicated and converted from .pages format to .zip and .pdf formats to ensure access. Original files formats have also been kept. The book jackets and books in box 3 were all art directed by Ferrara, with some also featuring her design and typography.
Arrangement Note:
The slides in box 1 were arranged by Ferrara in projector trays. These were moved into archival slide folders and numbered according to their slot in the tray. Where the specific source of each group of slides could be determined they are organized in that fashion. However, if they were not marked then the slides are grouped with the rest of the tray according to the listing created by the donor. The book jackets in box 2 are arranged first by publisher then chronologically, reflecting the original inventory provided by Ferrara. Book jackets in box 3 were kept in their original order, differentiating only between paperback and hardcover. Items no. 90-135, also in box 3, were received in September 2015, and document Ferrara’s work as an art director for Gruppo Mondadori in Milan in the 1980s-1990s. These were also kept in their original order.
