Historical Note:

The Grolier Club was established on January 23, 1884 by a group of nine New York City bibliophiles who had gathered with the idea of founding a club devoted to the book arts. As stated in Article I, Section 2 of the constitution set forth by the Club, the purpose of the Grolier Club is “literary study and promotion of the arts pertaining to the production of books”. [1] In order to manage and govern the members and activities of the club a Council was created, comprised of 21 members who would serve as Trustees of the Club. The Council is divided into three classes, each comprised of seven members, who serve for a three year term. At each annual Club meeting, seven new Council members are elected to replace the outgoing class.[2] The council is led by four officers: President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary. The Council holds monthly meetings, with the exception of June-August. During meetings, the Chairs of both Program and Support committees, and any ad-hoc committees present a report for the approval of the Council. The minutes of these meetings are recorded by the appointed Secretary.

Scope and Content Note

This collection is comprised of the minutes of the Grolier Club Council Meetings from its founding in January 1884. The minutes record the activities and recommendations of the committees and record important gifts to the Club, as well as decisions regarding membership and actions regarding members. A name and subject index exists for the period 1884-ca.1945. Volumes 1-6 are holograph, Volumes 7 and forward are typescript.

Arrangement Note:

This collection is arranged chronologically. Series I consists of original Council Meeting Minutes as recorded by the Secretary. Series II is the index for the Council Meeting Minutes covering the period 1884-1945. Series III is comprised of unbound materials relating to council meetings.
