Peña, J. Fernando.
Constantinou, Meghan.
Holzenberg, Eric.
Librarians.

Biographical/Historical Note:
Prior to 2004, the Grolier Club Librarian also acted as Club Director.  In 2004, the position was separated into two roles; Eric Holzenberg continued to serve in the Directorship position while J. Fernando Peña, Curator, became Librarian. [1] Though there was a change in job title with this decision, specific responsibilities and job descriptions appear to have changed minimally. In 2011, Peña resigned his post to accept a position as Director of the Rare Books and Special Collections program at Long Island University, and Meghan Constantinou was appointed Librarian.  Please see the Grolier Club Institutional Records, Series 1, Subseries A, Records of the Librarian/Director finding aid for materials relating to all Librarians prior to 2004, and for a more detailed history of the position.

Scope and Content Note:
This collection is comprised of correspondence, invoices and bills, photographs, grant applications, and other materials relating to the projects and activities completed by the Librarian and library staff, including cataloging and conservation projects. Some digital materials are also present, and are available through the repository.

Related Materials Note:

Council Meeting Minutes

Arrangement:This collection is arranged chronologically, with each individual Librarian designated as their own series.  Where materials exist, Assistant Librarians, Curators, and Cataloguers are also included.  Due to the fluid nature of positions and the promotion of individuals between positions, where applicable an individual’s materials have not been separated based on their job title.  For example, J. Fernando Pena served as Cataloguer and Curator before being promoted to Librarian in 2004; all of his materials, regardless of his position, have been kept together.  Within series, materials were kept in their original order, reflecting the arrangement used by the Librarian.  As such, arrangement may vary between series.  Please see individual notes accompanying each series for further explanation.  Titles in brackets were devised by the Archivist.

Container List:

Series I:  Jose Fernando Peña, Librarian

            J. Fernando Peña began his career at the Grolier Club in 2001, working as Cataloguer under Librarian/Director Eric Holzenberg.  In 2002 Peña took the position of Curator, a job synonymous with Assistant Librarian.  In 2004, after it was decided that the Librarian/Director position should be split into two positions, Holzenberg retained the position of Director and Peña transitioned into the role of Librarian.  Peña resigned in 2011 to accept the Directorship of the Rare Books and Special Collections Program at Long Island University’s Palmer School of Library and Information Science.

Arrangement Note: Materials in this series are arranged alphabetically.  The bulk of these files were removed from a file cabinet in the Grolier Club library, which had also been used by Eric Holzenberg. Some of the files maintained by Peña were continuations of files started by Holzenberg, and thus some overlap does occur.

[1] From 1884 to 1997 the chief operating officer of the Grolier Club held the title of Librarian. Seeking a term more reflective of the general administrative nature of the post, the Council changed the title successively to Director & Librarian (1997), and Director (2004).

From 1884 to 1983 the assistant to the chief operating officer of the Grolier Club held the title of Curator. In 1983, with the appointment of Allen Asaf, the position title was changed to Cataloguer. In 2000 the title Curator was revived with the intent of bestowing it on those who had successfully passed a probationary period as Cataloguer. In 2004, with the decision to change the title of the traditional Grolier Club COO post from Librarian to Director, the title of the assistant position was changed from Curator to Librarian, a more accurate description of the post and its duties.
