Biographical/Historical Note:
Lathrop Colgate Harper (1867-1950) was a prominent antiquarian bookseller in New York City. After completing his education he joined his elder brother Francis P. Harper at the latter’s New York City book shop around 1887. The company title was changed to Francis P. and Lathrop C. Harper about 1907, and Francis retired shortly thereafter in 1910. At this point the firm came to be known as Lathrop C. Harper Inc., and Harper increasingly developed a specialization in early American books and incunabula. Two years after Harper’s death, the firm was sold to Bernardo Mendel, and managed by Douglas Parsonage and Otto Ranschburg. After Mendel’s death in 1967 the firm was briefly owned by the Indiana University Foundation, until it was purchased by a group including Parsonage and Ranschburg.[1] Lathrop C. Harper was highly regarded and influential in the development of many collections. He maintained active involvement in many bibliophilic organizations including the Bibliographic Society of America, the American Antiquarian Society and the Grolier Club. He received honorary degrees from the University of Michigan and Brown University.[2]
