Historical/Biographical Note
New York City printer who operated the Gilliss Press with his brother Frank Gilliss and known for his classic taste in book design. Walter Gilliss served as typographical adviser to Doubleday, Page & Co., while his own press printed over 300 books for private individuals and bibliophile societies, universities and publishing houses. His masterpiece of design and execution is generally considered to be The Iconography of Manhattan Island by I. N. Phelps Stokes. Gilliss was a founding member of the Grolier Club and served as its secretary from 1906 to 1925. 

Scope and Contents
Items printed for the Grolier Club by Gilliss, including invitations and exhibit announcements. Also printed material sent to Gilliss. Some Grolier Club correspondence and a duplicate set of annual meeting minutes (1906-1910), including lists of candidates for seats on the Club’s council in 1909. A small amount of personal material includes Christmas cards and photographs, including one of Gilliss with a group of employees from Doubleday gathered around a sundial he designed for the home of Frank Nelson Doubleday in Garden City, New York.
