Historical Note

Founded in 1884 by a group of nine New York City Book collectors, with the object, as stated in its constitution, “of literary study and promotion of the arts pertaining to the production of books,” the Grolier Club mounts three public exhibitions each year, publishes catalogs and other materials, and sponsors lectures on the book arts and print culture. The Committee on Publications is one of the original committees of the Grolier Club and is charged with supervising, subject to the direction of the Council, all publications issued by the Club. Originally its mandate included taking charge of and responsibility for the stock of publications on hand. [1]

Scope and Content Note:
These records include minutes, invoices, typescripts, proofs, photographs and negatives, correspondence, and illustrations. Not every type of material is represented for each publication. The publications themselves are held separately, and can be accessed through the library catalogue.

Not all publications are represented in the archives, and special attention was given to the retention of major catalogues and publications. Annual reports of the Committee on Publications appear in the Yearbook of the Grolier Club.

Correspondents include but are not limited to: Frank Altschul, Douglas F. Bauer, Theodore Besterman, T.M. Clelland, Jean Furstenberg, E.P. Goldschmidt, Frederic Goudy, Robert D. Graff, Ruth S. Granniss, William Ivins, Henry Watson Kent, Flora Livingston, John Henry Nash, A.W. Pollard, Elizabeth Riley, George M. Shieffelin, Daniel Berkely Updike, and Monroe Wheeler. The files relating to individual publications often contain autograph and typed letters signed by the authors and illustrators.

 Arrangement Note:
The Publications Committee Records has two different arrangement schemas that reflect the work of different archivists.

Records created before 1984 were organized by record type, including minutes, invoices, and sales records. These materials are not organized by publication, but reflect the activities of the committee. During this period, there are also records organized by publication, which contain drafts and proofs. Searching for type of record or specific time period is helpful for these records, which may contain information about a variety of publications.

After 1984, the records are organized by publication, and reflect all of the functions of the committee related to that publication. These records contain the same types of materials as those created before 1984, but can be accessed mainly through a search for the title of the publication or year the materials were created. There are some exceptions, so this finding aid should also be searched if you are looking for materials related to the committee’s activities in a certain date range that may or may not be related to a specific publication.

This finding aid itself reflects the order in which the boxes were processed and is not in order chronologically or alphabetically. Please search using ctrl + F, and/or use the Publications List Index, outlined below.

To facilitate easier searching, in 2013, the archivist created an index to the finding aid (Publications List Index) that was based on the publication history at the Grolier Club. Publications were organized in the same order created in the book For Jean Grolier & His Friends: 125 Years of Grolier Club Exhibitions & Publications. The numbering schema in the book is also used in the index. The publications included in the index are only those for which we hold records. In order to find information about publications in different boxes, the organization schema in the index allows the librarian or researcher to look for specific time periods and for particular publications. This is a tool for easier access to the materials that have been processed in a variety of ways by multiple archivists.

Related Materials Note:
Many of the publications represented here are catalogues of exhibitions held at the Grolier Club. For more information about particular exhibitions, please see the Exhibitions Records, Record Group 3 of the Grolier Club Institutional Records.
