Historical and Biographical Note
Thomas Frognall Dibdin (1776-1847) was an English bibliographer whose book, Bibliomania (1809 and later editions), spurred interest in the collecting of rare books and early editions. Dibdin edited various catalogs and books of gossip about collectors, authors and collections, but scholars have found much to criticize in his work. John Windle, a San Francisco book dealer specializing in appraisals, bindings, and early printed books and manuscripts, published his descriptive bibliography of Dibdin’s writings in 1999. Karma Pippin, who assisted materially, is the co-author.
Scope and Contents
Material relating to Windle’s descriptive bibliography of Dibdin’s works published in 1998. Collection includes: original references and notes; original manuscript, typescript and notes with correspondence, and later drafts as well as proofs in design stage. Includes a copy of the Oak Knoll Press catalog for autumn 1998, which contains the first print advertisement for the book.
