Biographical/Historical Note:

The Katharine Kyes Leab & Daniel J. Leab American Book Prices Current Exhibition Awards are given annually in recognition of excellence in the publication of catalogs and brochures that accompany exhibitions of library and archival materials, as well as for electronic exhibitions of such materials. They are administered by the Exhibition Awards Committee of the American Library Association / Association of College and Research Libraries (ALA/ACRL) Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS), whose operating expenses are covered by a generous endowment from Katharine Kyes and Daniel J. Leab, editors of American Book Prices Current. The Committee acts as the jury for the awards; submissions are judged on originality, accuracy of detail, informational content, effectiveness of design, and other factors. A first-place award and occasionally an honorable mention or special award of merit is given in each of five divisions: Divisions One, Two, and Three, comprising Expensive, Moderately Expensive, and Inexpensive Printed Catalogs; Division Four, Printed Brochures; and Division Five, Electronic Exhibitions.

The award was first given in 1986; the earliest catalogs considered for an award were published in 1982. The fourth division, Exhibition Brochures, was introduced in 2001. Electronic Exhibitions, the fifth division, was established at ALA Midwinter 2003, following a three-year pilot project conducted by the Committee, and the first award was given in 2004. The entries for any one year include catalogs for one or more previous years.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection consists of exhibition catalogs submitted to the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section, Association of College and Research Libraries, for consideration for its Exhibition catalog award, together with those receiving the award.

The Grolier Club run includes catalogs for 1986-1988, 1990, and 1991-[current]. Catalogs prior to 1998 may have been cataloged individually and should also be searched in library's online catalog. The variety of description in this collection can be attributed to changing descriptive practices for this collection at the Club.

Arrangement Note:

Catalogs are arranged by the date of the contest for which they were submitted. The container list covers the years 2013 and 2014 and oversize material, and within each year’s submissions is further arranged by contest category, where known. Contents of boxes 1-25 are arranged chronologically, though catalogs are not listed individually, and so are not included in the following inventory.

2019 Award Entries received by Grolier Club but not processed.

A list of winners of and submissions to the competition can be viewed on the RBMS Exhibition Awards Committee website: http://www.rbms.info/committees/exhibition_awards/index.shtml
