Biographical/Historical Note:
The Grolier Club was founded in New York City in 1884 for the purpose of promoting the arts of the book through exhibitions, publications, and events. For its Centennial in 1984, the Club organized a program of exhibits, publications, public events and social events for members. The Centennial Fund was launched in the fall of 1982 to raise money for capital projects. The Club’s Centennial Committee, Robert D. Graff chair, oversaw all activities while the Club’s Council and Committees on Publications, Public Exhibitions, and Modern Fine Printing played active roles. Robert Nikirk, Club Librarian and Elizabeth Riley and William Reese, successively chairs of the Committee on Publications, also took leadership roles.

Scope and Content Note:
The Grolier Club Centennial records collection includes records documenting the Centennial fundraising campaign, Centennial events, and major Club publications issued for the Centennial. Publication material includes authors’ typescripts, galley/printers’ proofs from the Stinehour Press, and related correspondence. The following publications are represented: Joseph Blumenthal’s The Typographic Years (1983); Bibliography, Its History and Development by Bernard Breslauer and Roland Folter (1984); The Grolier Club: Its Library, Publications and Exhibitions (1984) and Books and Prints, Past, Present and Future: Papers Presented at the Grolier Club Centennial Convocation (1984). Also present are index cards of member information assembled by Allen Asaf for Members of the Grolier Club, 1884-1984 (1986). There are also invitations and other printed ephemera issued in connection with the Centennial, an autograph score for the Grolier Centennial Fanfare composed by Lawrence Benz, and approximately 275 photographs of Centennial events.
