Provenance
Materials in this collection were produced during the normal course of operations by the Executive Committee, Board members, and Executive Director of the American Trust for the British Library. ATBL’s archival records were passed down from former executive directors and Board members such as Lansing Lamont and Mary Shuford and were housed in boxes at Seana Anderson’s home office until 2016, when ATBL decided that it would be important to formally archive and preserve the collection. The collection, including all future additions, was officially donated to The Grolier Club by the American Trust for the British Library on April 20, 2018.

In April 1979, Douglas Bryant, Director of the University Library at Harvard, with support from Arthur Houghton, Jr. and Viscount Eccles, created the American Trust for the British Library as an independent U.S. charitable corporation. Under Mr. Bryant’s leadership, the ATBL was extremely effective raising over $4.7 million in the years up to 1992. Most of the funds replaced parts of the British Library’s North American collections, which had suffered damage during World War II. In the process of rebuilding the collections, he also provided microfilm copies of important works—an inspired idea that benefited many U.S. collections, as well as the British Library.
In addition, the ATBL of those years gradually acquired a small group of up to 300 members. These people reflected diverse constituencies, including scholars who appreciated the British Library’s unique resources, bibliophiles, and Anglophiles, many of whom had studied or worked in the United Kingdom, admired the British Library, and sought to express tangibly their support.
The American Trust for the British Library is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to promote and support the work of one of the world’s greatest research libraries. The ATBL seeks to promote transatlantic understanding through related events, lectures, and discussion in the USA and the UK, as well as providing incremental financial and gifts-in-kind support for the British Library’s collecting, preservation, and outreach activities. The Trust was founded in 1979 and is supported through the generosity of its increasingly wide membership in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Scope and Content Note
This collection consists largely of business and legal correspondence, financial reports, records of grants given by the American Trust for the British Library to the British Library, and records of monetary (both individual and foundation) and in-kind donations to the ATBL. The collection contains minutes from Annual and Executive Committee meetings; general correspondence, e.g., letters and email between ATBL officers and the British Library; financial records including bank statements, check stubs, bills, receipts, financial statements, income tax returns and budgets; membership lists and membership correspondence from 2010-2016; newsletters, brochures, invitations and photographs from Annual Meetings and other ATBL events. Also included are digital photos on CD-ROMs.
Arrangement Note
This collection was processed at Executive Director Seana Anderson’s home office beginning in 2016 and was completed in April of 2018. On April 20, 2018, six bankers’ boxes of ATBL archival materials were transferred to The Grolier Club for permanent deposit.
This collection is organized into seven Record Groups (RGs), based on the main activities of the ATBL. These RGs are then broken down into series. Numbers listed under each series in the organizational structure outlined below refer to box numbers, which contain relevant material. The container list, which follows then, provides brief folder-level description for the contents of each box.
Abbreviations have not been used for the most part to avoid confusion. However, ATBL is used to refer to the American Trust for the British Library and BL is used to refer to the British Library.
